Happy hour etiquette, according to bartenders

June 29, 2026

Happy hour is the busiest, lowest-margin shift of the day for most bars. A few small habits make it better for everyone, including you.

Know the deal before you order

The happy hour menu is usually a specific list, not a blanket discount. Asking whether your drink is on special after it’s poured puts the bartender in an awkward spot. Look first, then order.

Tip on the full price

This is the one bartenders bring up most. A $12 cocktail you paid $6 for still took the same work. Tipping on what the round would have cost is the difference between happy hour being worth working and not.

Don’t stack your order against the clock

Ordering four drinks at 6:59 to beat a 7 PM cutoff is legal and everyone hates it. If you want one more, get it with a few minutes to spare.

Close out before the rush

If you’re leaving right as the dinner crowd arrives, settling up early saves everyone ten minutes.

Sit at a table if you’re a group

Groups spread along the bar block the people ordering. Most places would rather seat you, and you’ll get better service for it.

Actually eat something

Food specials exist partly because bars want you eating. It’s cheaper than you think during happy hour, and it makes the whole thing go better.

Use Zappy to check the happy hour menu and cutoff time before you get there, so none of this comes up.
