Plan an Austin bar crawl that actually works

June 22, 2026

Most bar crawls fall apart for the same two reasons: too much walking, and arriving somewhere just after the happy hour ended. Both are avoidable.

Pick one part of town and stay there

The crawl dies the moment someone has to order a car. Downtown, South Congress, East Sixth and Rainey each have enough density that you can do a whole evening on foot. Mixing two of them means you’re mostly in traffic. East Austin has the most happy hours of any part of town, so it’s the easiest place to build a route without repeating yourself.

Work backwards from the earliest cutoff

This is the part people get wrong. Happy hours don’t end at the same time: some stop at 6, some run to 7, a few go past 10. Find the place with the earliest cutoff and start there, then move toward the ones that stay open late. Doing it in the other order means paying full price at the first stop for no reason. The places that run until 10 or 11 PM belong at the end of the night, not the beginning.

Three stops, not six

Two hours per bar sounds generous until you’re actually sitting down, ordering, waiting and settling up. Three is a real evening. Six is a plan that collapses at stop four.

Put food in the middle

Somewhere with a food special around the second stop keeps the night going. Half-off appetizers exist for exactly this.

Have one backup per stop

Places get slammed, close early, or turn out to be hosting a private event. Knowing the bar across the street saves the night.

One last thing, since a crawl is a group and groups are the hard part of a bar’s evening: the etiquette is worth reading before you take six people to a full bar at 5:30.

Use Zappy to filter by area and time, and build the route around what’s actually running that evening.
